CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -
Navy women's lacrosse junior Michelle Verbeeck (Wading River, N.Y.) has been named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. This is Verbeeck's second career weekly league honor.
Verbeeck earned her first start of the season in goal on Saturday at Colgate, helping the Mids post an 8-6 victory to clinch a fifth straight Patriot League Tournament berth.
Verbeeck played the full 60 minutes and made seven saves to push her season record to 3-0 and her career ledger to 11-2. The goalie also increased her career record against Colgate to 4-0.
Navy (13-2, 4-0 PL) has employed a goalie platoon all season with Verbeeck and senior Elaina Ponchione (Silver Spring, Md.) splitting time in the cage. Ponchione started Navy's first 14 games of the season and has played roughly 53 percent of Navy's goalie minutes. Verbeeck typically subs in during the second half and has played roughly 40 percent of the team's minutes. Three reserve goalies make up for the final percentage of Navy's goalie minutes.
Verbeeck holds a 7.72 goals-against average on the season with a .505 save percentage, ranking first in the Patriot League in both statistical categories. Due to Navy's goalie platoon, Verbeeck doesn't have enough minutes to be eligible for the NCAA statistical rankings, but if she was, her GAA would be the fifth-best in the country and she would be ranked sixth in save percentage.
As a team, Navy is ranked sixth in the country in goals-against average at 8.27 per game. The Mids have held 10 opponents to nine goals or fewer and the team holds a .468 save percentage.
Navy will host American on Friday at 7:00 pm in a game that will be televised by CBS Sports Network. Friday's game will be Navy's 'Senior Night' and a win would clinch the Patriot League regular season championship.
