Two Mids Earn Women's Lacrosse Academic Honors

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy seniors Emily Mellin (Sherwood Forest, Md.) and Kathy Young (Berwyn, Pa.) have been named to the 2012 IWLCA Academic Honor Roll, the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association announced. Mellin and Young are among 173 student-athletes from 56 institutions to be recognized by the IWLCA for academic success. Honorees must be at least a junior academically (as of last spring) and meet the minimum GPA standards.
Mellin and Young helped Navy to a third-straight Patriot League title and NCAA Tournament appearance last spring. The Mids won a program and Patriot League record 18 games (18-3) and finished the season ranked No. 14 in the national RPI rankings and No. 19 in the deBeer Media Poll.
Young, an attacker, was named the Patriot League Tournament's Most Valuable Player after scoring a league-record seven goals in the title game. Her 58 goals led Navy and were the 11th-most in the country and she scored 62 points overall last spring.
Young is an ocean engineering major with a 3.56 cumulative grade-point average. She ranks ninth in her class in Military Order of Merit. She has been named to the Commandant's List six times, the Superintendent's List three times and the Dean's List once.
Young was also named to the All-Patriot League First Team and the Patriot League All-Academic Team last spring.
Mellin started 19 games as a first-line defender and was also used as a midfielder. Mellin ranked third on the team with 30 ground balls and was third with 16 caused turnovers. Mellin helped Navy's defense rank sixth in the country in scoring defense (8.33 goals allowed per game) and the team held 14 opponents to under 10 goals.
Mellin holds a 3.49 grade-point average as an ocean engineering major and has been named to the Commandant's List three times, the Dean's List twice and the Superintendent's List twice. Mellin is a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection.
Mellin is currently serving as the Company Commander of the 5th Company during the fall.
