ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Four-time defending Patriot League Champion Navy women's lacrosse head coach Cindy Timchal announced the 16-game slate for the 2014 season on Wednesday. The Mids will face five first-time opponents and host 10 teams at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
"We are excited for the opportunity of this Navy team in 2014 to continue the success that it has shown on the field the last four seasons," said Coach Timchal. "Coming into the season, the most exciting part will be the addition of two very distinguished teams that will be added to our conference schedule, Boston University and Loyola (Md.)."
Navy will open up the 2014 schedule on the road against Longwood on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Noon. The Mids are 5-1 in their season openers, having most recently opened the 2013 season with a 23-4 win over Winthrop.
Following the season opener, the Mids welcome three Big South conference opponents during their three-game home-stand. Navy, who is 6-0 in its home openers, will host Campbell on Friday, Feb. 14 for its home opener at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Then Liberty on Tuesday, Feb. 18 and Davidson on Sunday, Feb. 23 to wrap up the home-stand.
Then Navy travels to BIG EAST foe Villanova on Feb. 26. The Mids and Wildcats have split the first two games in the all-time series with Villanova winning the most recent contest, a 15-14 overtime thriller, in 2009. The Mids return home to face Atlantic-10 opponent George Washington on March 5. Navy defeated the Colonials last season, 9-6, in Washington, D.C.
The Mids begin their quest for their fifth-straight Patriot League Tournament Title, when they host Lafayette on March 8. Navy, since entering the Patriot League in 2008, is a combined 38-9 in League play. The Midshipmen have not lost a League game, regular-season or postseason, in 14-straight contests (Last loss vs. Lehigh in 2011 regular-season finale).
The next two weeks will encompass four Patriot League opponents, two at home and two on the road. Navy will travel to Bucknell on March 15 and American on March 19. Then the Mids will return home to face League-newcomer Boston University on Saturday, March 22 and Colgate (March 29) the following Saturday.
Boston U. enters the Patriot League having won nine America East Conference Championships, including a conference-best six straight from 2005-2010. The Terriers finished the 2013 season 6-10, with highlighted wins over #14/12 UMass (9-8 OT) and #15 Ohio State (16-11).
The Midshipmen have a two-game break from League play with non-conference contests against San Diego State (April 2) and Michigan (April 5). The Mids will celebrate the careers of their 10 seniors on April 5 when they play Michigan.
The Wolverines begin their inaugural varsity season under the tutelage of Jennifer Ulehla. Ulehla, a 1991 Maryland graduate, played for Coach Timchal from 1990-1991, earning All-American honors in both seasons.
Navy wraps up its longest home-stand of the season, eclipsing five games over two and a half weeks, with a conference game against Lehigh on April 9.
The Mids will finish their 2014 slate on the road against Holy Cross (April 12) and the second League-newcomer Loyola (April 19). Loyola comes to the Patriot League from the BIG EAST, having tallied back-to-back conference championships from 2011-2012.
With the addition of Boston U. and Loyola, the Patriot League Championship will have six teams competing for the title instead of four. The top two seeds entering the tournament will have byes and highest seeds will host the quarterfinals on April 22. Then the regular-season champion will host both the semifinals and finals on April 25 & 27. Since joining the league in 2008, the Midshipmen have played host to three of the six tournaments and have claimed the title four times. Navy owns an 9-2 all-time record in the Patriot League Tournament.
