Women's Rowing Opens Season With Murphy Cup Victory

The Mids first and second varsity crews were both victorious on Saturday.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Navy women's rowing team got its 2012 season off to great start on Saturday at the Murphy Cup Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., as the Mids' first and second varsity eight boats both took home titles.

"It was a great day for the team and a terrific way to start the season," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "It was a long day - the conditions were tough and there were a lot of delays due to the weather. It's early in the season, so we still have to keep moving forward, but we had a great day and we're really happy with our results."

The Mids ended the marathon day on a high note as the varsity eight won the final race of the regatta. Competing against five other crews in the finals, Navy took the title by nearly a boat length as the varsity eights posted a time of 7:27.44. George Washington, which beat Navy by nearly 10 seconds in the heat race earlier in the day, took second place with a time of 7:30.78.

Navy's second varsity eight cruised to its title as it crossed the finish line in 7:45.90 in the finals, beating second-place St. Joseph's by 10 seconds.

Like the first varsity, Navy's second varsity crew also came up short to George Washington earlier in the day in its heat race before eventually coming back to win the finals.

"Those were great wins for both crews," said Hughes.

Navy had three varsity four crews in action on Saturday as well, all of which placed third in their respective heats. The Mids' top varsity four boat turned in a time of 9:55.45 - missing a spot in the finals by just four seconds.

The Mids' novice eight also competed and placed third in its heat race with a time of 8:42.01.

Navy will be back in action next Sunday when it takes part in the Occoquan Sprints in Woodbridge, Va.
