March 29, 2014

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – The Navy women’s rowing team began its 2014 spring season with a standout performance at the 32nd Annual Murphy Cup Regatta on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. on Saturday. Participating in four events, Navy crews earned titles in three and a third place finish in the fourth.

“Today was a great day for Navy rowing,” said head coach Mike Hughes. “There was a deep showing by Patriot League programs at the regatta so we got a measurement of where we stand amongst our conference foes. The performances by our three V4 boats, going 1, 2, 3, and our V8 team, winning by 10 seconds, were outstanding.”

The Midshipmen’s initial win of the day came in Varsity 4 action. Navy’s top three V4 boats showed their strength early as each won its respective morning heats before putting on a dominant showing in the final. Navy ‘A’ ran away with the overall crown as it finished first with a time of 9:02.95. Navy ‘B’ and ‘C’ made it a clean sweep of the top three with times of 9:16.28 and 9:25.14, respectively. The Mids’ three teams defeated their next closest opponent, George Washington by nearly 12 seconds.

Navy’s next triumph in finals action came courtesy of its Novice 8 boat. After winning its qualifying heat by over 15 seconds, the Mids came out in the afternoon and defeated the field by 8.2 seconds with a final time of 8:34.33. Temple finished runner-up at 8:42.53.

The program’s final win of the day was by the Varsity 8 team in a competition for the Murphy Cup. The Mids extended their hold on the Cup to three straight years with a high-level performance in the finals as they completed the course in a time of 7:47.06, 10.1 seconds ahead of the second-place finishing Bucknell boat.

Navy’s JV8 team rounded out the day of action on the Cooper River with a third-place finish of 8:21.38. The Mids were in tight competition with St. Joseph’s throughout the race and fell just 2.61 seconds shy of the Owls for second place.

The team will look to carry its momentum over to next Saturday, April 6 at the Occoquan Sprints in Woodbridge, Va.
