Pennsauken, N.J. - The Navy women's rowing team began its spring schedule in strong fashion on Saturday at the Murphy Cup Regatta on the Cooper River outside Philadelphia, Pa., as the first and second varsity eight crews both won their finals races for the second consecutive season.

"It was a fantastic day for all of our crews," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "The first varsity was very good and I was pleased to see that. It was a great way to start the season for us."

The first varsity started the day by taking the top spot in its heat race with a time of 6:47.28, topping second-place Drexel by 10 seconds. In the final, Navy led from the start, then extended its lead in the final 500 meters and held off Buffalo by a length-and-a-half, 6:44-6:49.

The second varsity eight also began the day by winning its heat, cruising to a first-place finish by six seconds with a time of 7:05. Like the first varsity, Navy's second varsity also had to hold off Buffalo in the final, which took second place. Also similar to the first varsity final, the 2V crew extended its lead as the race neared the finish line and clocked a winning time of 6:58, while Buffalo finished with a 7:02.

The Mids had three varsity four crews in action on Saturday and all three won their heat races. In the final, Navy's `A' boat took the title with a time of 7:44. The Mids' `C' crew missed out on second place by just one second and took third with a time of 7:52. The `B' boat placed sixth with a time of 8:06.

Navy's novice eight took second in both its heat and final races. In the final, the Mids clocked a time of 7:08.54. Lehigh finished first with a 7:04.

The Mids will return to action next weekend with the Occoquan Sprints on Sunday.
