FAIRFAX, Va. - The Navy women's rowing team had a successful Sunday at the Occoquan Sprints as both the first and second varsity boats came home with victories. It marked the second straight weekend the two boats won their finals races.

"Both boats were very good today," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "The second varsity was really impressive. It was a great win over some very good teams."

The first varsity had the fourth-fastest time in the three morning heats and won its race with a time of 6:48.7 to advance to the finals. The Mids' top crew got out to an early lead in the finals with a fast first quarter of the race. Old Dominion and Bucknell were able to keep pace and closed the gap in the final 100 meters. But the Mids hung tough and held on for the win, crossing the finish line in 6:45.5. Old Dominion placed second by less than a boat length with a 6:46.8, while Bucknell took third at 6:47.8.

"We were really able to take it up another level at the end there and that was good to see," said Hughes.

The second varsity won its morning heat by nearly 10 seconds over second-place George Mason with a time of 7:08. In the finals, Old Dominion stayed in pursuit and made a hard charge at the end. But the Mids were able to pull away down the stretch and clocked a first-place time of 7:03.5. ODU took second with a mark of 7:11.9.

Navy's varsity and novice four crews were also in action on Sunday, however there were only heats and no finals races. The Mids' top varsity four boat clocked a time of 7:51.1 to take second in its heat race, while its second boat turned in a 7:57.1 to take third in its heat.

The novice four took second in its heat with an 8:16.68.

"I feel really good about our conditioning level at this point in the season," said Hughes. "We need to keep getting faster now as we move along."

The Mids will be back in action on Friday and Saturday at the George Washington Invitational.
