FAIRFAX, Va. - For the second consecutive weekend, the Navy women's rowing team had its top two boats claim titles. The Mids' varsity eight and second varsity eight crews both took first place in their respective finals races on Sunday at the Occoquan Sprints, a week after doing so at the Murphy Cup.

"To sweep in both varsity events was excellent. It was another great Navy day," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "The importation thing now is for us to remember that we are where we should be, but we have to keep getting faster. We can't sit back and relax; we have to keep getting faster each week."

The varsity eight began its day by winning its heat race by just under seven seconds, holding off Bucknell's `B' boat with a time of 5:41. In the six-boat finals race, Navy again won with ease. The Mids crossed the finish line in 5:49.9, nearly five seconds ahead of Bucknell's `A' boat.

The second varsity eight won its heat race by topping Temple by a margin of nearly five seconds. The Mids clocked a 5:57.8 to clinch a spot in the finals. Navy and Drexel battled in the finals with the Mids coming out on top by almost three seconds, posting a time of 5:48.4. The second varsity eight also held of Drexel last weekend in the Murphy Cup finals.

The novice eight had a strong heat race, taking first place by over eight seconds. But in the final, the Mids dropped to fourth as Grand Valley State won the race with a time of 6:05.3 - 13 seconds ahead of Navy's time.

"I thought the novice boat did a pretty good job today," said Hughes.

The Mids sent three varsity four crews to compete in Fairfax, Va., on Sunday and all three were successful. Without heats and just finals races, all three crews placed first in their respective competitions. The `A' boat won its final over Bucknell by a margin of seven seconds with a time of 5:32.2. Both the `B' and `C' crews found themselves in much tighter races as the margin of victory for both boats was less than a second. The `B' crew held off George Mason by 0.76 and the `C' boat topped Duquesne by 0.99.

"I'm really happy with what we did today," said Hughes. "We have really good speed, but I think we're capable of great speed."

The Mids will look to build on their success in the past two weekends when they next compete April 12-13 at the George Washington Invitational.
