Women's Rowing Sweeps Georgetown on First Day of GW Invitational

Navy went 3-for-3 versus Georgetown on Friday.

April 11, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Navy women’s rowing team put recorded a three-for-three showing on Friday afternoon on the first day of competition at the George Washington Invitational. Racing on the Potomac River, the Mids earned victories over Georgetown in varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four races.

“It was a great day for us, getting a sweep of Georgetown,” said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. “I was slightly disappointed in our varsity eight race because we had a full boat length lead with 500 to go and did not respond when Georgetown started sprinting. It didn’t cost us the victory, but we should have won by more, so that’s something that we will definitely work on. Though overall it was great to get three wins and now we’ll look forward to tomorrow’s racing.”

Navy’s V4 depth was on display in the first race of the afternoon as the Mids finished first and second. The ‘B’ crew won with a time of 7:20.5, while the ‘A’ crew  finished 3.47 seconds behind at 7:23.97. Georgetown’s entry rounded out the field with a time of 7:51.44.

In the 2V8 race, Navy once again went one-two as Navy ‘A’ took first place at 6:46.5. The Mids’ novice eight team raced as the Navy ‘B’ and finished 4.85 seconds back with a time of 6:51.35. The novice crew held off Georgetown in a tight battle as the Hoyas completed the course at 6:52.33.

The Mids and Hoyas rounded out their afternoon of racing with a competitive bout in V8 action. In the tightest margin of the day, Navy defeated Georgetown by 1.56 seconds, 6:33.3-to-6:34.86.

At the completion of Day One, the Mids are tied with MIT for first place in the Howard H. Wilkins Bowl point standings with 36 points each.

Navy will be back for the second day of the Invitational on Saturday and are scheduled to take on George Washington at 8:00 a.m. and Duquesne at 1 p.m.
