Women's Rowing Goes Five-For-Five in Final Regular Season Meet

Navy won all five races on Saturday versus St. Joe's and Rutgers

April 19, 2014

PHILADELPHIA – Racing on the Schuykill River on Saturday, the Navy women’s rowing team aced its final regular season test with a perfect five-for-five showing in action versus St. Joseph’s and Rutgers. The Mids won all five races by a minimum of 6.4 seconds. The varisty eight crew concluded its regular season with a flawless 5-0 mark in head-to-head races and titles at both the Murphy Cup and Occoquan Sprints.

“The conditions were perfect and the weather was perfect with bright sunny skies,” said Navy head coach Mike Hughes.  “The river was fast with a slight tail breeze. The elements set up for very fast results today.  We had a fantastic day with a sweep of all of our races.”

The Mids day began with a dominant 11.6-second win in the varsity eight race over St. Joseph’s. Navy posted a time of 6:13.3 versus a 6:24.97 for St. Joseph’s.

After registering its smallest margin of victory of the day in the 2V8 by just 6.46 seconds (6:30.5-6:36.96), Navy’s final V8 boat, the third varsity, cruised to a 14.75-second victory over the host St. Joseph’s Hawks. The Mids posted a time of 6:38.0 compared to a 6:52.75 for the Hawks,

In varsity four action, Navy entered three boats over the V4 and 2V4 events. In the initial V4 race, the Mids defeated Rutgers by over 12 seconds with a 6:55.4 result. In the 2V4 competition, Navy flexed its depth as both the ‘B’ and ‘C’ boats finished atop the standings. Navy ‘B’ won the event with a time of 7:01.3, while Navy ‘C’ held off Rutgers 7:11.16 to 7:13.0.

“That concludes our regular season racing and we were fortunate enough to go undefeated,” said Hughes. “To go without a loss in two straight spring regular seasons, that’s special. It’s been a great run and its all because we have such great kids and athletes.”

Navy will take a week off from competition before seeing action at the EAWRC Sprints in Cherry Hill, N.J. on Sunday, May 4.
