PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Navy women's rowing team went 1-1 in action against Boston U. and Saint Joseph's on the Schuylkill River on Saturday morning. Boston University won the Varsity 8 race by over four seconds, while Navy took home top honors in the second Varsity 8 boat.
Navy's split in the top boat moves Navy's record to 19-4 overall.
Navy defeated Saint Joseph's by almost 10 seconds in the Varsity 8 boat. Boston University won the race with a 7:04.38, while Navy was second with a 7:08.82. Saint Joseph's finished third at 7:18.54.
"It was a very good race," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "We were leading for about 1200 meters and were even until about the last 500 meters. They just did a better job driving home."
Navy's win on the day came in the second Varsity 8 race, defeating Boston University by almost a second-and-a-half. Navy's boat was clocked at 7:16.8, while Boston U. was second 7:18.16. Saint Joseph's was third in 7:29.22.
"The second varsity was a fantastic race. We were even with Boston U., most of the way, pulled ahead about half-way through and then held off a late charge to push ahead at the end," said Hughes.
Navy finished the Varsity 4 boat in second place, seven seconds behind Boston U. Navy's third Varsity 8 boat also finished in second.
"It would have been nice to win today, but we felt like we had some good races today and good efforts," said Hughes. "Hopefully this weekend will set us straight for next weekend's Patriot League Championship."
