CHERRY HILL, N.J. – After a nearly flawless regular season slate, the Navy women’s rowing program came out on Sunday and notched five gold medals over six competitions at the Eastern Association of Women's Rowing Colleges Sprints (EAWRC). Led by a strong come-from-behind victory in the varsity eight race, the Mids earned 76 team points to finish second overall in the day long championship on the Cooper River.

“It was a historic day for Navy Women’s Rowing,” said head coach Mike Hughes. “We won the varsity eight race, which is an amazing honor. Even though we finished second in the point standings, the fact that we won five gold medals, especially in the varsity eight is something that you’d take any day.”

After finishing second in its initial heat of the day with a time of 6:48.145, the varsity eight crew came back with vengeance in the grand final and set down a scorching 6:23.358 time to finish nearly five seconds ahead of the second-place finishing Lions of Columbia University (6:28.321).

“We were down slightly in the first 500 meters and fought back in the next 500 to draw somewhat even,” said Hughes about his V8 crew. “We made our move in the third 500 to take a significant lead and then we just closed it out down the final 500 to get the win.”

Navy next collected three of its win in V4 action, as the Mids won titles in the ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ competitions. The ‘A’ crew won both its heat and grand final on Sunday with an initial time of 7:38.062 before recording a 7:16.639 result in the final. The Mids defeated Boston College (7:23.173) by over six seconds in the grand final.

Navy and Boston College faced off down the stretch in both the V4 ’B’ and V4 ‘C’ races, as well. In the ‘B’ grand final, the Mids cruised over the Eagles and the rest of the field by 12.522 seconds, 7:43.38 to 7:55.902. In the ‘C’ final, the spectators at the Cooper River course were witness to a much tighter race as Navy won 8:01.639 to 8:02.479.

The Mids’ final gold medal effort came from the novice eight crew, that registered a time of 7:01.079 to finish ahead of the runner-up Bulls of Buffalo (7:06.844).

Navy’s second varsity eight team also raced on Sunday and recorded a result of 7:03.217 in its qualifying heat before finishing fifth in the grand final with a time of 6:56.927. Columbia took the 2V8 title at 6:42.973.

Northeastern won the Willing Point Trophy with a final team total of 78 points. Navy finished second with 76 points to finish 10 points clear of the third place Columbia squad (66). Overall, 12 teams participated in EAWRC racing on Sunday.

Navy will take a week off from competition before seeing action at the Patriot League Championships in Worcester, Mass. on Friday, May 16.
