WORCESTER, Mass. – The Navy women’s rowing program took second place overall at the 2014 Patriot League Championships on Friday in Worcester, Mass. Racing on Lake Quinsigamond, the Mids were victorious in the second varsity eight and varsity four races, but a victory in the varsity eight event by Boston University led the Terriers to the four-point win for the team title, 49 to 45.

Navy’s titles in the 2V8 and V4 gives the program 13 all-time in Patriot League Championship history and at least one win in five consecutive seasons.

“It’s pretty disappointing that we weren’t able to come away with the title,” said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. “The conditions were very tough as teams that were racing in the first or second lane faced challenging cross head-winds that handicapped their abilities greatly. Even though our V4 crew won from lane two, they were 20-plus seconds better than the field and only won by seven seconds.  It’s a shame that the weather dealt us that hand, but that’s racing; it’s an outdoor sport. It’s tough because we had competed so well all year, especially against teams in this field in prior events.”

“Individually, I’m happy for the 2V8 and V4 that they were able to come away with titles.”

The Mids’ day on Lake Quinsigamond started with outstanding times in the preliminary heats in the morning. Racing on the 2000-meter course, Navy’s varsity eight and varsity four boats posted the fastest times at 7:27.254 and 8:37.529, respectively. In second varsity eight action, the Mids recorded the third quickest time amongst the nine competitors at 7:48.888.

In the afternoon’s grand final racing, Navy cruised to a 7.043-second victory over Boston U. in the varsity four championship, 8:23.310 to 8:30.353. The win gave the Mids nine points in the team standings.

The second varsity eight race was the second competition on the afternoon grand final slate for Navy and the Mids matched the earlier efforts of the V4 crew with a Patriot League title. The Mids defeated Bucknell for the victory by over four seconds at 7:30.468 to 7:34.821.

After collecting 18 points for its win in the 2V8 race, Navy was ahead of Boston U., 27-22, going into the last competition, the varsity eight grand final. The Mids had a strong effort in the event and dropped their time from heat racing by 5.409 seconds down to 7:21.845, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Terriers put down a scorching time of 7:14.580 in the grand final. In a tight head-to-head battle down the stretch, Bucknell (7:18.467) and MIT (7:19.612) finished in second and third ahead of Navy.  With the V8 championship scored out of 27 points, the first place result by BU (27) and a fourth by Navy (18) gave the Terriers the overall team title.

“Looking back on the season, it was really tremendous for us,” said Hughes.” In two- and four-lane racing we were great. To go undefeated in the regular season and to then win the EAWRC Sprints was a great accomplishment for this team.”
