"The competition here is great and there's no question it's challenging going against the best crews in the country," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "We love it and we're looking forward to the racing coming up tomorrow and Sunday. We would have liked to have done better in the repechages, but now we'll try get into the C finals."

A continuous rainfall and strong wind at Eagle Creek Park made things tough on the competitors.

"We've rowed in tough conditions before, but we're ready for it - that is where we're strong. We didn't have anyone complain," said Hughes.

The varsity eight began the day with a fifth-place finish in its heat race, clocking a 7:33 - 22 seconds ahead of sixth-place Marist. In the repechage, the Mids placed seventh with a 7:39.

Navy's second varsity crew took sixth in its heat with a 7:44, which was 8 seconds behind fifth-place Rhode Island. The second varsity then took seventh in the repechage with an 8:05.

The varsity four took fifth in its heat race with an 8:33, finishing 5 seconds ahead of Gonzaga. In the repechage, Navy clocked nearly an 8:34 and again finished fifth, ahead of both Rhode Island (8:35) and Marist (8:56).

"It was a good couple of races for the fours. We're very happy with their effort," said Hughes.

All three Navy crews will compete tomorrow in the C/D semifinals where the top-three finishing crews will advance to the C final and the remainder will drop to the D final. The C and D finals will take place on Sunday morning.
