INDIANAPOLIS - The varsity eight crew was the only Navy boat to see action on Saturday at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., as severe thunderstorms and rough water conditions postponed the rest of the day's events. The second varsity eight and varsity four semifinals, which were supposed to take place Saturday morning, will now occur Sunday morning. The rest of Sunday's schedule will remain as is.
Competing in one of the two C/D semifinals, Navy's varsity eight stayed close with Notre Dame, Cornell and Boston University through the middle part of the race. Notre Dame and Cornell began to pull away toward the final 500 meters and BU also extended its lead on the Mids. Notre Dame won with a time of 7:37, Cornell followed with a 7:43 and BU a 7:47. The Mids clocked a 7:51, which was 2 seconds ahead of Gonzaga.
"Despite the conditions, it was a good, clean race for us," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "I was happy with our effort and we held off a challenge from Gonzaga as well."
The varsity eight will compete in the D final tomorrow at 9:10 a.m.
