Women's Rowing Completes First-Ever NCAA Championships Experience

Navy placed 20th in the nation.

June 2, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS - The Navy women's rowing team wrapped up the program's inaugural trip to the NCAA Division I Rowing Championships on Sunday at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind. All three Navy crews competed in the D finals and as a team, the Mids placed 20th with 17 points. Ohio State edged California, 126-124, to win the NCAA National Championship.

"It was a great experience. Everyone here is fast and you have to remember that - it's the elite," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "Everyone did the best they could do and hopefully we can be back here again next year. We have a great group returning next year."

The final race for the varsity eight saw the Mids and Gonzaga battle for the top spot. The two crews stayed close and Navy lead with just 500 meters to go. However it was Gonzaga that pulled ahead at the end and won by just over a boat length, 6:47-6:51.

"The varsity had a good race, but they just didn't have enough gas at the end" said Hughes. "They were disappointed, but I liked that we went out and took command of the race."

After taking fourth in their semifinal race, the varsity four went on to win the D final later in the morning. Navy never trailed and held a slight edge throughout the race. The Mids finished with a time of 7:43, which was 3 seconds ahead of Boston University.

"The four rowed a great race in the final. That is good to see for next year," said Hughes.

The Mids' second varsity eight placed fourth in its semifinal and then took part in the D final. Gonzaga led the race from the start and never relinquished the lead, while Rhode Island and Navy chased from the second and third spots, respectively. The Mids were just a boat length behind with 500 meters to go, but could not pull even. Gonzaga won with a time of 6:54, followed by Rhode Island with a 6:59 and Navy with a 7:03.
