Women's Rowing Collects Pair of Second Place Finishes at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta

Navy's Novice 'A' and Varsity 'A' boats earned second place honors on Saturday

Oct. 26, 2013

PHILADELPHIA - The Navy women's rowing team finished competition at the 2013 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on Saturday with a pair of second place results. Racing in `head' events, the Varsity 8 and Novice 8 crews earned runner-up finishes in their respective races on the Schuylkill River.

"Our crews did well today," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "As past champions of this regatta, our expectations are always high, so while we are a little disappointed not to win, we are happy with our overall effort."

In the first event of the day for the Mids, the Freshmen/Novice 8, the Navy `A' boat finished second out of 33 participants with a final time of 16:37.94. The Mids `B' boat took 17th with a time of 18:52.10.

"We're really high on the potential of our Novice crew, the results they had today and throughout the fall is really exciting," said Hughes.

Navy's second team to earn a runner-up finish was the Varsity 8 `A' boat, who completed the 2.5-mile course in a time of 15:46.37. The Mids finished less than five seconds behind the eventual Championship Eight race winner, Trinity.

"The Varsity 8 was the lead boat in the head lineup and that position always poses a unique quandary," said Hughes. "With no one in front of you, you have to really work hard to give it that extra push at the end and unfortunately the latter teams could adjust to our pace down the stretch. A second place finish was still very impressive against a strong lineup of teams."

Navy also had two boats compete in the Collegiate/Open Club Eights race. The `A' crew finished 10th out of 40 teams, with a time of 17:05.92. The `B' team incurred a one-minute penalty after leaving its lane and dodging a team to increase its 17:10.10 time to a revised 18:10.10. The `B' crew dropped from 12th to 29th overall after the penalty.

The women's rowing team will conclude its fall season next Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Head of the Occoquan in Woodbridge, Va.
