ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's rowing team will begin its 2013 spring schedule this Saturday with the Murphy Cup. The all-day event will take place on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. Heat races will begin at 9 a.m. with the finals races starting at approximately 2 p.m.
The Mids are hoping to repeat the success they had at last year's Murphy Cup where they took home titles in the first and second varsity eight races.
"It will be a measuring stick for us going into the season," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "We won it last year, and we're out to win it this year. It should be a great measure of our speed this early in the season and I think we'll have a good idea of where we are as a team."
Navy will have three boats competing in different varsity four heats, racing at 9:42 a.m., 9:49 a.m. and 9:56 a.m. The novice eight crew's heat race is slated for 10:31 a.m., with the second varsity following at 11:06 a.m. There will be three varsity eight heats with the top boat from each heat advancing to the finals. The next three boats with the best times across all heats will also advance. Navy's heat race will be at 12:51 p.m. and the finals are scheduled for 3:36 p.m.
Navy is coming of a fall schedule in which the varsity crew placed first or second in three of the four regattas in which it competed. With offseason training now over, the team is looking forward to returning to competition.
"We trained in Norfolk, Va., at the Hampton Roads Rowing Club over spring break," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "We had quite a few practices on some great water. It was very productive and we're just ready to go now."
