Women's Rowing Picked as Favorite in Patriot League Preseason Poll
April 3, 2014
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Navy women's rowing team was selected to finish first in the 2014 Patriot League Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's coaches and sports information directors.
The Mids, the 2013 Patriot League Champions, garnered 121 points and nine first-place votes to edge Boston University (118 points, eight first place votes) for the top spot in the poll. Bucknell received the remaining first place vote and was tabbed for third with 96 points followed by Georgetown (89), MIT (71) and Holy Cross (62). Colgate (35), Lehigh (35) and Loyola (21) rounded out the final three spots in the poll.
The Patriot League Championship is scheduled to be held on May 16 on Lake Quinsigamound in Worcester, Mass. The Patriot League champion will earn a bid to the NCAA Rowing Championships, set for May 30-June 1 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis.
Last season on Lake Quinsigamound, Navy scored 35 points to claim the championship, winning the Varsity Eight (6:29.31) and the Second Varsity Eight (6:41.59) races. The win ended Bucknell's seven-year run as Patriot League champions.
In recognition of the Mids’ victory, Navy coach Mike Hughes was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year for the third time in his career. At the NCAA Championships, Hughes guided the Mids to a 20th-place finish.
Boston University will be participating in the Patriot League Championships for the first time in 2014. Last season, the Terriers were the Colonial Athletic Association champion and finished in 18th place at the NCAA Championships. Georgetown and Loyola University Maryland are also debuting in Patriot League women's rowing action, increasing the field from six teams to nine.
Navy and Bucknell are the only two teams to ever win a Patriot League Championship. The Mids won in 2005 and 2013 and Bucknell won seven consecutive titles from 2006 through 2012.
A strong showing at the Murphy Cup Regatta last weekend kicked off the Mids' 2014 spring schedule. This Sunday, they will compete at the Occoquan Sprints in Woodbridge, Va.
