Two Mids Named to Academic All-Patriot League Rowing Team
CENTRAL VALLEY, Pa. – The conference accolades continued rolling in for the 2017 Patriot League champion Navy women’s rowing team on Thursday as the league office announced the Academic All-Patriot League Team. The duo of Julia Arthur (Arlington, Va.) and Miranda Kosmides (Hightstown, N.J.) were named as recipients of the honor that recognizes success both in the classroom and on the water.
Arthur, the bow seat in the first varsity eight crew, will graduate next week with a cumulative GPA of 3.80 as an honors oceanography major. A staple in the first varsity boat over her final three seasons, Arthur has garnered All-Patriot League First Team honors for her athlete prowess in each of the last two seasons (2016, 2017). Navy’s V8 crew finished second at the league championship last Friday on the Cooper River. This is her third career Academic All-Patriot League Team selection.
Kosmides, the bow seat in the Mids’ second varsity eight crew, completed her third academic year at the Naval Academy with a cumulative GPA of 3.82 in ocean engineering. A 2016 All-Patriot League First Team award winner, Kosmides help lead Navy’s 2V8 crew to a dominant 15.313-second win over Bucknell at the league championship. This is the second consecutive year that the New Jersey native has been selected for this honor.
This is the third straight year that Navy has had multiple Midshipmen on the Academic All-Patriot League Team as four student-athletes garnered accolades in 2015 and three did the same in 2016.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
The awards were voted on by sports information directors around the league who could not cast a vote for their own student-athletes.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
