May 22, 2014
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy senior rower Katherine Ashton was one of 11 student-athletes named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team, it was announced on Thursday by the conference. It is the fourth consecutive year that Navy has had an individual selected to the team.
Ashton, a senior mechanical engineering major, will graduate this weekend with a 3.77 cumulative GPA. During her time at the Naval Academy, she has been named to the Commandant’s List in six of her eight semesters and earned academic recognition on the Patriot League Honor Roll (’11-’13) and as a CRCA Scholar Athlete (’12-’13).
A native of Austin, Texas, Ashton just finished her fourth year as a member of the varsity rowing ranks at Navy. After participating with the Patriot League winning varsity four crew in 2011, she was elevated to the varsity eight crew the next three seasons and helped the V8 Mids win the 2013 title. As a team, Navy earned its first berth in the NCAA Championships in 2013 after winning the Patriot League team title.
An accomplished rower outside of Annapolis, Ashton competed for the United States at the U-23 World Rowing Championships in Linz, Austria during the summer of 2013. She also finished fifth out of 189 entrants at the World Indoor Rowing Championships in 2013.
The 11-member All-Patriot League Team was selected by the conference's sports information contacts. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key contributor. Freshmen are not eligible for this honor.
Navy women’s rowing team completed its season on Friday, May 16 at the Patriot League Championships. The Mids won titles in second varsity eight and varsity four competitions and came in second overall to Boston University in the team standings.
