Several Women's Rowers Receive Academic Honors

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Senior Jacqueline Penichet has been selected as the 2013 Patriot League Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while also being one of 11 student-athletes named to the 2013 Academic All-Patriot League Team. Additionally, Penichet was one of five Mids to be named a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar Athlete, it was announced by the organization this week. She joined teammates Katherine Ashton, Michaela Bilotta, Hannah Dildine and Catherine Oakley who were also named CRCA Scholar Athletes.

Penichet, the coxswain of Navy's varsity four boat that finished second at the conference championship and helped the Mids win their second Patriot League title, had a 3.79 cumulative grade-point average as a systems engineering major. The senior is the fourth Mid to win the award and first since Kerry Hannon in 2009. Penichet was named to the Superintendent's and Commandant's Lists in both semesters as a senior and in seven of her eight semesters during her collegiate career. She joins Colgate junior Natalie Bauman and MIT junior Erin Meyer as the League's first three-time Academic All-League selections in rowing.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.



Ashton (mechanical engineering, 3.76 GPA), Oakley (oceanography, 3.6 GPA) and Bilotta (honors English, 3.56 GPA) are all members of Navy's varsity eight crew, while Dildine (aerospace engineering, 3.63 GPA) rows in the seven seat of the second varsity eight.

To be eligible for CRCA Scholar Athlete accolades, the student-athlete must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, be at least a sophomore and have rowed in an NCAA eligible boat for a minimum of 75 percent of the spring races or have raced at a conference event.
