Ashton Named CRCA First-Team All-America
June 11, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy women's rowing rising senior Katherine Ashton has been named to the Pocock Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) All-America First Team, it was announced Tuesday by the organization. It marks the second consecutive All-America honor for Ashton after being named to the second team last season.
CRCA All-America honorees must have rowed in at least 75 percent of their team's spring races in the varsity boat. The erg score of the nominees as well as the national finish of the team's varsity boat are also factors. Head coaches nominate student-athletes for the award.
Ashton is a two-year member of the varsity eight boat and helped lead the crew to one of its best seasons in program history in 2013. In winning its race at the Patriot League Championships, the varsity eight helped the Mids capture their first league title since 2005. The league title gave Navy an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history.
The varsity eight went 5-0 in head-to-head action this past spring and took first place at both the Murphy Cup Regatta and Occoquan Sprints. The Mids also won the George Washington Invitational.
Ashton, a native of Austin, Texas, earned CRCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region and First-Team All-Patriot League honors earlier this season.
