The Navy women's rowing team has been honored as the 2012-13 recipient of the Director of Athletics Cup, it was announced today (Aug. 20) by Athletics Director Chet Gladchuk.
The Director of Athletics Cup was established to recognize intercollegiate excellence and the Naval Academy varsity team that exemplifies itself as a standard bearer in academics, leadership, varsity competition, conduct, aptitude for commission and honor.
"I was pleasantly surprised and very happy," said women's rowing head coach Mike Hughes. "The team really worked hard to earn it and we're very honored."
The women's rowing team captured their second Patriot League title in 2013, earning the program's first bid to the NCAA Championships. The varsity eight crew posted a 5-0 record and, along with the second varsity eight, picked up titles at the Murphy Cup and Occoquan Sprints. Navy also won eight of nine races at the George Washington Invitational to win the overall points trophy.
Academically, the Mids posted a strong year as well. Jacqueline Penichet was selected as the Patriot League Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was also one of 18 members of the team that earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. Five Mids were also recognized as Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Scholar Athletes by posting GPAs above 3.5.
