Rowing Teams Head to Philadelphia for the Navy Day Regatta
Oct. 12, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy heavyweight, lightweight and women's rowing teams will all be in action on Saturday at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa. It will be the first competition of the season for the heavyweight and women's teams, as the lightweights began their fall slate last weekend with the Occoquan Challenge.
"We're ready to get as many of our guys racing as possible this weekend and everyone Will Race twice," said Navy heavyweight head coach Rob Friedrich. "It's a regatta that helps us prepare for later in the fall season and it's definitely a great event for spectators. It's our first race of the season and we're excited to see how our depth has developed."
Navy women's head coach Mike Hughes is also eager to get a look at his team.
"It's our first race, so we'll se where we are and it will really be our benchmark for the fall," said Hughes. "We'll put our best people together and see where we stand."
Historically, all three Navy squads have performed well at the Navy Day Regatta. Last season, the Mids' three teams combined to win seven races, including the men's heavyweight collegiate four, the men's lightweight / heavyweight collegiate frosh/novice eight, the men's heavyweight collegiate JV eight, the men's open/collegiate lightweight eight, the men's heavyweight collegiate frosh/novice four, the men's heavyweight open/collegiate eight and the women's open/collegiate eight.
The Navy Day Regatta began in 1986 as a way to promote and support the U.S. Navy's birthday (Oct. 13, 1775) among the Navy and Marine Corps.
