Varsity Crews to Conclude Fall Season at Sunday’s Princeton Chase

Oct. 27, 2017

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The entire contingent of Hubbard Hall crews will be in action this Sunday with competition at the 2017 Princeton Chase. With 24 entrants across seven different events the men’s heavyweight and lightweight teams, as well as the women’s team will all be racing along a 2.75-mile stretch of Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N.J. starting at 9:00 a.m.

Navy will be one of 29 top-flight national programs that will be competing on Sunday. The Mids’ heavyweight squad will be first on the water with four crews amongst a field of 38 boats in the varsity heavyweight eights event at 9:00 a.m. The varsity crews from the women’s (3 boats) and lightweight (4 boats) ranks will go back-to-back at 9:30 and 10:00 a.m., respectively. At 10:45 a.m., the heavyweights will be back with four boats in four-man action. The freshmen/novice-level rowers will then take to Lake Carnegie with the men’s race at 12:15 p.m. with two heavyweight and two lightweight crews racing before the women’s side has one boat entered in the 1:00 p.m. event. Navy’s lightweight corps will conclude Sunday’s racing at 1:30 p.m. with varsity four action.

Last year in Princeton, the heavyweight, lightweight and women’s teams combined for seven top-10 finishes across six events. The Mids’ lightweight team highlighted the effort with five of its crews finishing amongst the top-10 in varsity eight, freshmen eight and varsity four action. The heavyweights took an eighth in the freshmen eight race, while its first varsity crew finished ninth overall.

The Princeton Chase course is 2.75 miles long. Spectators may watch the racing from the start located just off Route 27 (Nassau Street) at the Kingston end of the lake, the Harrison Street Bridge or at the Washington Road Bridge located near the Princeton boathouse.

After Sunday, the heavyweight and lightweight programs will race freshmen boats in the Rutgers Fall Classic on Nov. 5, while the women will step away from competition until March 25 and the Cooper Sprints.
