Women's Soccer Opens Season With Draw
Aug. 19, 2011
HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Navy women's soccer team opened the 2011 season on the road on Friday and played to a 0-0 tie with High Point. The Mids outshot the Panthers, 11-9, including a 10-2 advantage in regulation.
"Our defending and goalkeeping was solid tonight - we didn't allow them much through regulation," said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. "I think they got some energy in the overtime sessions and both teams were able to get some chances."
In overtime, a rejuvenated Panthers squad outshot the Midshipmen, 7-1, but the Navy defense held.
Navy goalkeeper Alexes Lopez-Shaw finished with three saves and backstopped a stout Navy defense that didn't allow a shot until the 37th minute of the game.
The Panthers' (0-0-1) goalkeeper Andrea Ritchie also had three stops.
"We played a lot of people tonight and a good amount of freshmen got some experience," said Gabarra. "Tonight was a good building block and we have to get better. We knocked the ball around well at times, but still have a long way to go."
Navy (0-0-1) will be back in action on Sunday when it meets North Carolina State at 1 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.
