EMMITSBURG, Md - Five different players scored as Navy (13-1-0) defeated Mount St. Mary's (6-5-0), 5-0, at Waldrom Family Stadium on Sunday in Navy's final non-conference game of the regular season. Navy continues the nation's longest active winning streak with its 13th straight win.
"We were pretty sharp today," head coach Carin Gabarra said. "We generated a lot of good scoring chances and put a high percentage of them away. It was also good to see the balance in scoring. We are not relying on any one person to carry the load offensively and on any given day we can get contributions from any player."
Navy scored just 2:10 into the contest when junior midfielder Taylor Batye (Tampa, Fla.) scored off an assist from sophomore defender Julie Schumacher (Plantation, Fla.). Schumacher sent Batye on a run through the Mount St. Mary's defense and she shot past the keeper who came out to challenge.
The Mids would score again in the 21st minute when sophomore forward Morgan Dankanich (Glenmoore, Pa.) netted her ninth goal of the season. Junior midfielder Brittany Fruin (McLean, Va.) and junior forward Paloma Perez (Mobile, Ala.) both assisted on Dankanich's goal.
Freshman defender Lizzy Rullan (East Setauket, N.Y.) netted her second goal of the season in the 31st minute from sophomore defender Jade Seabrook (St. Paris, Ohio) after a corner kick as Navy took a 3-0 lead.
The Mids finished off the game's scoring in the 77th minute when senior captain Kelsey Learned (Auburn, Wash.) scored her second of the season from freshman Nikki Peterson (Milford, Conn.) and Hunter.
Navy has six shutouts on the season and the team has shut out each of its last three opponents, its longest such streak since 2009.
"Our defense has been playing well," Gabarra said. "We continue to get better and better back there."
Navy out shot Mount St. Mary's, 15-5, and held a 9-2 edge in shots on goal as the team improves to 12-0-0 all-time against the Mount. Navy also improves to 4-0-0 on the road this season.
Navy (1-0 PL) will resume Patriot League play next weekend with a pair of home games. The Mids will host Lafayette (1-0 PL) on Friday at 7:00 PM and Lehigh (0-1 PL) on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
