Navy Drops Patriot League Road Match to Lehigh
Oct. 9, 2011
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh tallied a goal in the 18th minute and made it stand as Navy suffered a second straight road defeat, falling 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Ulrich Sports Complex. Navy is now 1-2 in the Patriot League and 8-5-2 overall. Lehigh improves to 2-1 in league and 6-5-1 overall.
"It was not one our better games but we had a reasonable effort," head coach Carin Gabarra said. "It was the second game in a row where our opponent was able to bury the only good opportunity we gave them. We were able to generate some chances, but we failed to capitalize."
Lehigh sophomore forward Murphee Greenley scored on 17:08 off an assist from Leah Kulp. Greenley took a cross from Kulp and fired to the top of the net above Navy keeper Alexes Lopez-Shaw.
Navy's Ashlynn Soellner took a team-high two shots on goal. Soellner had one of Navy's best opportunities to score, but her header from six yards out off a corner kick sailed over the net.
Late in the first half, freshman Jade Seabrook took a cross and made good contact with her head, but Lehigh's keeper made a diving save to keep Navy off the board.
The Mids picked up the pressure in the second half, outshooting Lehigh, 9-4, but were unable to get the game-tying goal.
Navy outshot Lehigh, 15-11. The Mids also led in shots on goal, 7-4. The Mountain Hawks held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Lehigh goalkeeper Ashley Banks made seven saves for her fourth shutout of the season. Navy still leads the all-time series, 12-4-4.
The Mids will next host Colgate on Saturday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
