Navy Remains Unbeaten In Patriot League Play, Defeats Bucknell, 2-0
Oct. 11, 2013
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Carrying her offensive success from Tuesday, junior forward Morgan Dankanich (Glenmoore, Pa.) scored two more goals as Navy defeated Bucknell, 2-0, on Friday, Oct. 11 at Emmitt Field. With the win, the Mids remain unbeaten in Patriot League play at 5-0-0, while Bucknell falls to 2-3-0.
“It is always good to grab three points in the Patriot League on the road, especially against a good opponent, is a good result,” said head coach Carin Gabarra. “However, we did not have as many chances on offense as we could have because we did not connect on passes. We still need to be able to play better in both halves and we will continue to work on it in our future training sessions.”
Navy (12-2-0, 5-0-0 PL) put the offensive pressure on early in the contest. In the 18th minute, defensive back Julie Schumacher (Plantation, Fla.) sent a well-placed volley into the middle of the box. Schumacher’s pass connected with teammate Dankanich’s head to the far post for an early 1-0 lead.
Minutes later, the Mids were awarded a free kick from 30 yards out from the net. Dankanich, taking the honors of the free kick, lifted a high curling shot that wrapped inside the near post for her second goal of the game in the 20th minute.
Navy’s backline continued to play very well together, holding Bucknell (5-8-0, 2-3-0 PL) to four shots overall and one on net through 45 minutes. The Mids midfield, led by Rachel Hunter, continued to put pressure following two goals by generating six more shots in the first half.
Bucknell came out in the second half looking to close the gap. The first 15 minutes of the second half saw the Bison challenge Navy goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner (Lititz, Pa.) with three shots on net. Bucknell’s Chelsey Garkowski led the charge with two shots, one of which was on net. However, Hoerner continued Navy’s consecutive shutout streak by denying all three shots that came her way.
Hoerner saw two more shots on net, but was able to preserve her seventh shutout of the season and extend the Mids consecutive shutout streak to 705:52 minutes. Hoerner, along with the Navy backline, has recorded 10 shutouts. Navy has not allowed a single goal in a Patriot League game through five games this season.
Hoerner improves to 11-2 overall with six saves in the contest. Bucknell’s Jessie Ashworth fell to 5-8-0 overall having tallied five saves on seven chances.
Navy held advantages in shots, 16-11, and in corner kicks, 6-4.
The Mids will conclude their non-conference slate against Penn on Monday, Oct. 14 at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility (3 PM).
