ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
Navy (11-5-3, 3-2-1 PL) won its second Patriot League women's soccer game of the weekend with a 3-0 win over Holy Cross (2-12-3, 0-5-1 PL) on Sunday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Navy is currently in fourth place in the Patriot League with 10 points and will clinch a berth in the postseason tournament with a win or draw at Bucknell next Saturday in its regular-season finale.
The Mids increase their home record to 8-1-1 on the year and the team is unbeaten (3-0-1) over its last four contests, including a 3-2 win over Army on Friday night.
"A six-goal weekend for us is big and I'm very happy with our offensive production," head coach Carin Gabarra said. "Our attack has been creating a lot of chances. We still have some work to do and we are looking forward to next weekend and continuing to get better."
Navy got on the board in the 11th minute when sophomore Paloma Perez made a long run down the right side and ripped a shot on goal. Holy Cross' goalkeeper Carly McCabe saved Perez's shot but freshman Morgan Dankanich was right there to knock in the rebound from six yards out. Dankanich's tally proved to be the game-winning goal, her third game-winner in the last three games (S.C. State, Army, Holy Cross).
"Morgan is a great finisher. She can finish with both feet and is a great attacking player," said Gabarra.
Seven minutes into the second half, Dankanich got a good look on net that McCabe had to leap to save. The ball deflected off her hands and went off the cross bar. McCabe then caught the rebound on the way down to control the ball.
Navy had another solid chance in the 60th minute when freshman Sam Lee sent a cross into the box that McCabe initially broke up, but she was unable to corral the ball. Perez was right there to head the ball towards goal, but McCabe made the stop.
The Mids would break the game wide open with two goals in a 1:15 span midway through the second half. Junior forward Brittany Fruin
served a corner kick into the box where senior Amanda Serfass
turned into a shot from 15 yards out to net her first goal of the season, on Senior Day.
A little over a minute later, freshman Gabby McIntyre had the ball near the right sideline and passed to a streaking Ashlynn Soellner. Soellner controlled the ball and ripped a shot on goal to beat the keeper for her fourth tally of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alexes Lopez-Shaw made four saves for her sixth shutout of the year. Lopez-Shaw has now posted two shutouts in two career games against Holy Cross. McCabe made 11 saves for Holy Cross, as the Mids put 14 shots on goal and took 22 shots overall, to the Crusaders' 11.
Three teams have locked up berths in the postseason tournament with Colgate (14 points), Lafayette (12) and Army (11) already in. Navy (10) and Bucknell (9) are battling for the final spot. Navy can earn a berth with a win or a tie against Bucknell. The Bison would clinch the final spot with a win against Navy.
Navy will play at Bucknell (3-3-0 PL) on Saturday at 12 noon.
Notes: Serfass, team captain Kate Herren and senior manager Alex Trujillo were honored prior to the contest in a Senior Day ceremony ... Navy has scored 11 goals over the past three games, the highest three-game stretch of the season ... Dankanich, Soellner and freshman Rachel Hunter share the team-lead of four goals.
