NICE, France - Naval Academy senior women's soccer player Danielle La Salle is currently studying abroad as part of the Cox Fund. The Cox Fund is a program that allows midshipmen to either study abroad or work at their respective language's Embassy abroad. In order to be selected for the Cox Fund, the student must have a minimum of a 3.0 grade-point average in language classes and a B in performance.

La Salle is spending part of her summer in Nice, France, which is in southern France on the Mediterranean and neighbors Monte Carlo and Cannes. La Salle attends class four times a week for four hours in the morning at an international language school. People from all over the world attend the school, though classes are small. In La Salle's class there are two Americans, two from Sweden, one from Mexico, one from Argentina, one from Finland, one from Switzerland and one from Denmark. The first half of the morning is spent on grammar and the second half on conversation and culture. The students are not allowed to speak their native language while at school.

"This has been a wonderful opportunity," said La Salle. "I have had a chance to be exposed to a different culture and had the opportunity to travel. I went to Salamanca, Spain, one weekend and visited other midshipmen who are studying there, and last weekend I went to Barcelona, Spain, and Palma de Mallorca. There is so much at your disposal over here, it's just a matter of being able to get to all the places you want to see."

The only part about France that La Salle hasn't liked is the occasional local who resents Americans.

"They're few and far between, but they can definitely make you fell unwelcome. It's very hard to break into the local crowd, but otherwise I have found the French to be very welcoming and accommodating."

La Salle says she misses American food more than anything. "Since I'm a picky eater and I don't like all the butter and cream they use over here, it has been a blessing to have my own kitchen in my apartment."

La Salle returns from France June 23 and leaves for San Diego the next day for a surface cruise on the LHA-3, USS BELLEAU WOOD. She returns from her cruise July 20 and will have a couple of weeks off before returning to school early for soccer practice.

"I haven't had the chance to play much soccer over here, much to my disappointment," said La Salle. "I even brought my cleats in anticipation, but no luck so far. Nice is very metropolitan so there isn't much room for a field. I am looking forward to this season, I think we have a chance to be pretty good."

The Navy women's soccer team opens up its season on Aug. 31 at Pepperdine.
