Links associated with this release: ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The unveiling of the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility, a pair of home soccer invitationals and a trip home for ninth-year head coach Carin Gabarra headline the 2001 schedule for the Navy women's soccer team. Navy will kick off 2001 with a trip to California for the third time in the last four years. This, though, is no ordinary trip to the Golden State. It's the first time Gabarra will play at her alma mater, UC-Santa Barbara, since leaving as its all-time leading scorer in 1987. The Mids face Pepperdine in their opener August 31, followed by a meeting with the Gauchos two days later. "We are looking forward to opening the season out in California again this fall," said Gabarra. "It's a great opportunity to play out on the West Coast against some of the top teams. It is also a nice homecoming for me to go back to Santa Barbara." It will also be a homecoming for seven Mids who hail from the state of California. The Midshipmen will then return to Annapolis to unveil the new state-of-the-art Glenn Warner Soccer Facility Sept. 7-9 when the Mids play host to the Navy Soccer Invitational. Navy meets Davidson in the first round of action Sept. 7 at 7 p.m., while completing tournament action Sunday against Georgia Southern at 12-Noon. "Upon its completion, the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility will be one of the exceptional soccer complexes in America," said Gabarra. "It will provide Navy and its student-athletes with a state-of-the-art facility that supports the advancement of soccer." Navy will play its next five games at home, which includes another home invitational involving George Mason (Sept. 14, 7 p.m.) and Butler (Sept. 16, 12-Noon). Among the home stand, the Mids will open league play against the newest member of the Patriot League, American. While American is in its first year as a member of the conference, the Eagles have played the Mids four times. Navy owns a 4-0 series lead, having last played American Sept. 8, 1998, in a 4-0 decision in favor of the Mids in Annapolis. Meanwhile, Navy will participate once again in the Military Academies Classic in St. Louis, Mo. The tournament features Air Force, Army and Navy, while 2000 NCAA Tournament participant Wright State is this year's non-academy institution taking part in the tournament which benefits Toys For Tots. The Midshipmen will find themselves spending most of October on the road. Five of Navy's seven contests during the Halloween month will be played on foreign territory, including the Oct. 19 game at arch rival Colgate. The Mids, however, will end the month playing host to Army in the annual Star Game Oct. 26. Navy has captured an N-Star in each of the last three outings with the Black Knights. Following the Army contest, Navy will complete its regular season with a road trip to Bucknell Nov. 3. That will be the final tune-up for the Midshipmen before the Patriot League Tournament Nov. 10-11, held at the facility of the top-seeded team.
