ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy has been picked to finish second in the Patriot League Preseason Women's Soccer Poll, the league office announced today. The Mids received 77 points, and one first-place vote, to rank behind defending conference champion Colgate, who had 92 points and 11 first-place votes. The voting panel consists of the league's head coaches and sports information directors.

Navy just barely edged out Bucknell in the poll, earning just one more point than the 76 that the Bison received. American was selected to finish fourth with 68 points and was followed by Lehigh (46), Holy Cross (41), Army (33), and Lafayette (15). Bucknell's Christa Matlack was voted as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and American's Frederike Engel was named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

Navy has advanced to the four-team Patriot League Postseason Tournament in each of the past four seasons and 13 times in its 16 years as a league member. Navy was picked to win the league title in each of the previous three seasons (2007-09) and has been selected to finish either first or second eight times in the past 10 years.

The Mids also appeared in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Preseason Tournament 64 field at No. 54. The Tournament 64 field is a running attempt to project the postseason college soccer tournament qualifiers, including every automatic conference berth. The rankings will be released each Monday throughout the fall. Navy's 2010 opponents in the top-64 include Texas (43) and James Madison (48). Navy debuted in the preseason rankings at No. 53 in the 2009 and rose as high as No. 48. The Mids are the only Patriot League team currently ranked.

Led by 18th-year head coach Carin Gabarra, the Mids return nine starters and a pair of all-conference forwards in Carissa Youker and Christine Calderon from a year ago. Navy was 14-5-2 last season and finished fourth in the Patriot League (4-2-1).

Navy opens its 2010 season at South Carolina State on Friday, Aug. 20. Two days later, the Mids will play at Presbyerian on Sunday, Aug. 22.
