Pair of Freshmen Earn Women's Soccer League Honors
Sept. 17, 2012
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy freshmen Kaylie Davidson (Oceanside, Calif.) and Lizzy Rullan (East Setauket, N.Y.) have each earned women's soccer player of the week awards from the Patriot League, the conference office announced today.
Davidson was named the league's rookie of the week for the second time this season and Rullan was named the Patriot League BRINE Defensive Player of the Week.
Davidson and Rullan helped Navy (9-1-0) post a 2-0 week and extend the team's winning streak to nine games by defeating James Madison, 3-2, on Friday and knocking off VMI, 5-0, on Sunday.
Davidson scored three points last week, tallying a goal in Navy's win over VMI and also adding an assist against James Madison. Davidson, a midfielder, ranks fourth on the team with nine points (three goals, three assists). Davidson came off the bench in both games.
Rullan scored the game-winning goal in Navy's come-from-behind, 3-2, win over James Madison on Friday evening. The goal came after a corner kick and Rullan, who had her back to the net following the initial serve, flicked the ball backwards with her heel for the goal.
Rullan also started and played 90 minutes as a central defender in Navy's 5-0 win over VMI, helping the Mids post their third shutout of the season by holding VMI to just one shot.
Navy jumped four spots in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Poll to No. 5 after appearing at No. 9 the past two weeks. Navy also appears at No. 49 in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 64 Rankings.
Navy will host Boise State (4-5-1) on Friday at 7:00 PM.
