ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's soccer team (17-1-1, 5-0-1 PL) will host Bucknell (10-8-0, 3-3-0 PL) on Senior Day on Saturday at 12 noon at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Live statistics and live video (subscription based) will be available on NavySports.com(.)
Navy needs a win or a tie against Bucknell, or a Colgate loss or tie at American Saturday, to claim the No. 1 seed and hosting responsibilities for the upcoming Patriot League tournament. Navy has already clinched at least a share of the regular season title for the seventh time in program history.
Navy is also seeking a fourth unbeaten season in conference play in program history. A win would gave Navy a 6-0-1 mark in Patriot League play and would be the team's best-ever league winning percentage.
Navy earned two wins on the road last weekend, first defeating Army 1-0 in the Star Game on a goal by sophomore Jade Seabrook (St. Paris, Ohio). The Mids then won at Holy Cross on Sunday 2-1 with a goal and an assist from junior forward Ashlynn Soellner (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) and a goal from junior forward Paloma Perez (Mobile, Ala.).
Soellner's three-point effort extended her team lead in points to 27 (10 goals, seven assists) and sophomore forward Morgan Dankanich (Glenmoore, Pa.) is second on the team with 24 points (10 goals, four assists). Perez is third on the team with five goals and eight assists for 15 points.
Goalkeeper Elizabeth Hoerner's (Lititz, Pa.) shutout of Army was her third of the season. Hoerner holds a 1.14 goals-against average and is 15-1-1.
Soellner is 34th in the country in total points (27) and 43rd in total goals (10). Soellner also ranks 28th nationally with four game-winning goals. Dankanich is also 43rd along with Soellner with 10 goals and ranks 50th in the country with 24 points. Sophomore defender Julie Schumacher (Plantation, Fla.) ranks 16th in the country with nine assists and Perez's eight assists rank 31st.
Soellner ranks second in the Patriot League in points and goals and Dankanich is tied for second in goals and fourth in points. Schumacher's nine assists lead the league. Hoerner leads the Patriot League in conference matches in goals-against average at 0.63.
The Mids are ranked No. 8 in this week's NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region poll and team has been ranked for eight straight weeks. The team also appears at No. 45 in the Top Drawer Soccer Tournament 64 rankings.
Navy is ranked ninth in the nation with 2.63 goals per game and that figure also leads the Patriot League. Navy also leads the league in scoring defense at 0.95 goals allowed per game.
Navy is currently on an 18-game unbeaten streak (17-0-1), which is the second-longest active streak in the nation behind UCLA's streak of 24. Navy's winning percentage of .921 is the second best in the nation. Navy's 17 wins are tied for the second-most in program history. Earlier this season Navy won 15 straight games, which is the longest winning streak of any team in the NCAA in 2012.
Bucknell enters Saturday's contest at 10-8-0 and 3-3-0 in the Patriot League. The Bison currently sit alone in fourth place in the Patriot League with nine points. Lehigh, Army and Holy Cross are tied for fifth with six points. Bucknell needs a win or a tie to clinch a postseason tournament berth but could still potentially clinch with a loss due to certain league tiebreakers.
Bucknell owns league wins over Holy Cross (1-0), Army (2-0) and Lafayette (1-0). The Bison have fallen to Colgate (4-1), American (1-0) and Lehigh (2-1, 2OT).
Junior forward Chelsey Garkowski leads Bucknell with 19 points on eight goals and three assists and sophomore Courtney Nelson is second with 15 points on five goals and five assists.
Senior goalkeeper Sandita McDemott is 10-8 with a 1.30 goals-against average, an .807 save percentage and a Patriot League-best seven shutouts. McDermott has been named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week four times this season.
Bucknell is third in the Patriot League in goals per game (1.61) and second to only Navy in goals-against average (1.32).
All-Time Series vs. Bucknell
Navy leads the all-time series against Bucknell, 12-8-1, and is 10-7-1 in regular season contests. Navy defeated Bucknell 1-0 in the regular season finale last season, clinching a tournament berth for the Mids and eliminating the Bison from postseason play. Soellner scored in the 11th minute and junior goalkeeper Alexes Lopez-Shaw (Bothell, Wash.) made one save for the shutout.
Navy to Honor Seniors on Saturday
The women's soccer program will honor the three members of the Class of 2013 prior to Saturday's game in a special Senior Day ceremony.
