Team captain Beth Reed (0.67 GAA, .875 save pct., 9 shutouts) was named the third Navy goalkeeper to earn league player of-the-year honors.

Nov. 3, 2009

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - For the third time in four years, a member of the Navy women's soccer team earned Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year honors as senior team captain Beth Reed (Indianapolis, Ind.) was named the 2009 recipient of the award, the league office announced Tuesday morning.

Navy placed a total of four players on the All-Patriot League Teams, headed by a pair of first-team honorees in Reed and standout senior defender Shelly Moeller (Milford, Ohio). Junior forwards Christine Calderon and Carissa Youker were each named to the conference's second team as well, rounding out the four Midshipmen honorees.

Navy has now put at least two players on the All-Patriot League Team in each of its 16 years as a member of the conference.

Only the fourth goalkeeper in program history to be elected team captain, Reed joins her former mentor, Lizzie Barnes ('09) and Kate MacFarlane ('03) as the only Navy netminders to have earned Player of the Year laurels.

She has put together an outstanding senior campaign with 91 saves, a conference-best 0.67 goals-against average and a .875 save percentage - the 13th-best mark nationally. Additionally, Reed has established a new Navy senior class record, and is tied for the Patriot League lead, with nine solo shutouts.

A three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week this year, Reed has quickly risen up the Navy single-season and career lists despite being in just her first year as the full-time starter.

Shelly Moeller is one of just six four-time All-Patriot League selections in program history

She has produced a 0.62 GAA in 42 career appearances (2,630 minutes) and a .869 save percentage (119 saves / 137 SOG), both which rank first in Midshipmen history. Moreover, she currently stands among the top-five in saves, save percentage, shutouts and GAA on the Navy single-season charts.

Inarguably one of finest defenders in Navy and Patriot League history, Moeller was named a league all-star for the fourth-straight year and for the third time to the conference's first-team. She is one of just six Navy soccer players in program history and the first since Xochitl Piedra (2001-2004) to become a four-year All-Patriot League selection.

Moeller has started all 89 games of her collegiate career and will take over as Navy's games-played leader this weekend. Her consecutive games-started streak is the longest in school history and is believed to be among the longest in the 20-year history of Patriot League soccer (men's or women's).

Making this stretch even more impressive is the fact that Moeller, who is regarded as one of the conference's most physical defenders, will rarely come out of a match and, in fact, has led the team in minutes played four years running. She leads Navy this fall with 1,715 minutes played (out of a possible 1,850).

This season, Moeller has anchored a Navy defense that has posted a conference-best 11 shutouts and ranks second in the league in goals-against average. She also leads all Patriot League defenders in scoring in 2009 with nine points on three goals and three assists.

One of only three players to twice be named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Moeller has helped Navy post at least 11 shutouts in each of her four seasons and an amazing 53 shutouts since her freshman season. Additionally, with 18 goals and 43 career points she stands as the highest scoring defender in program history.

Christine Calderon has a career-best 15 points (6 g, 3 a) in 2009, including a team-best seven points (3 g, 1 a) in Patriot League play

Carissa Youker leads the Patriot League with 23 points (9 g, 5 a) and five game-winning goals

The conference's leading scorer during the regular season with a career-best 23 points, Youker earns Second-Team All-Patriot League honors for second-straight year. She is one of five double-figure point scorers for a Navy team, which owns the Patriot League's highest scoring offense (2.05 goals per game) headed into this weekend conference tournament.

Youker has built upon her breakout sophomore season (7 g, 2 a, 5 gwg) in 2009, establishing new career-highs in goals (9), assists (5) and points (23). She has also maintained her incredible propensity for scoring game-winning goals, netting a Patriot League-high five game-winners, including the lone goal in the Mids' 1-0 upset of ACC opponent Miami (Fla.) on Sept. 6. It is the second-straight season that Youker has produced five game-winners. Of her 18 career goals, 11 have stood to be game-winners, which ties her with Brigitte Fox ('08) for the third-most in school history.

Calderon, meanwhile, earns All-Patriot League honors for the first time in her collegiate career. A year after leading the Mids and finishing second in the conference with seven assists, the crafty third-year forward has evolved into one of Navy's top finishers.

Calderon has enjoyed a terrific year in the attacking third, producing a career-high six goals, three game-winners and 15 points. In seven league games, she has produced a team-high seven points with an assist and three goals (tied for the fourth-most in the conference), including the game-winners in conference victories over Holy Cross and Lehigh.

Navy will aim for its third Patriot League Tournament title in four years this weekend in Hamilton, N.Y. The Mids, who carry the No. 4 seed into this year's playoff, take on top-seeded Colgate in the semifinals Friday at 5:00 pm, with Sunday's championship game slated for 1 p.m.
