Navy PL Tournament Notes
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Making its fourth-straight and 13th appearance in 16 years as a member of the Patriot League, fourth-seeded Navy (14-4-2, 4-2-1 PL) will face top seed and tournament host Colgate (9-6-3, 5-1-1 PL) in the semifinals of the 2009 Patriot League Women's Soccer Tournament on Friday at 5:00 pm at Van Doren Field in Hamilton, N.Y.
For the second-straight year and ninth time in program history, the Midshipmen and Raiders will meet in the Patriot League Tournament. A year ago with the seeding reversed, Navy knocked out No. 4 Colgate on the strength of Kate Herren's 96th-minute winner in a 1-0 overtime victory on its home turf. The two teams played to a scoreless draw in this year's conference opener on October 2 in Annapolis.
Second-seeded American will battle No. 3 Bucknell following the Colgate-Navy contest at approximately 7:30 pm. The winners of the two contests will square off on Sunday at 1:00 pm for the 2009 Patriot League Tournament title and an automatic NCAA bid.

At the Helm
Head coach Carin Gabarra, now in her 17th year at the helm of the Midshipmen program, owns a 215-97-27 record (.674) at Navy, including a 66-28-12 (.679) mark in Patriot League play. She entered 2009 as one of just 27 active coaches with 200-plus wins and comes into this weekend with an all-time coaching record of 221-107-27 (.660).
A Winning Tradition
*Navy's Star Game win over Army on October 9 secured the program's 15th-consecutive season with 10 or more wins. The Midshipmen entered 2009 as one of 10 programs nationally (there are currently 321 DI women's soccer teams) to have won 10 or more games every season since 1998.
*Navy entered the week as one of only 22 teams nationally with 14 or more wins.
*Navy will make its fourth-consecutive Patriot League Tournament appearance this weekend in Hamilton, N.Y. The Mids have reached the league final in each of the last three seasons. Navy and Bucknell are the only two programs to earn a postseason berth in each of the last four seasons.

In a Class of its Own
Navy's four-member Class of 2010 (Jen Grijalva, Shelly Moeller, Beth Reed, Brittany White) set a school record for most wins by a senior class with the team's 2-0 shutout of Holy Cross on October 11. Over the last four years, this special group of Midshipmen has been at the forefront of the most successful run in the 17-year history of Division I women's soccer at the Naval Academy.
With a senior class record 64 wins, three league titles and two NCAA Tournament appearances to its credit, the Class of 2010 has established a new standard of excellence for future Navy teams to come.
Since their arrival in 2006, Navy has won more than 77 percent of its matches and boasts the seventh-best four-year record in all of college soccer. This fall, the foursome has guided the program to its 15th consecutive double-figure win season and its fourth-straight Patriot League Tournament berth.
With a win over Colgate, Navy would...
...advance to its fourth consecutive Patriot League Final and make its ninth championship game appearance
...register its fourth-straight postseason win over Colgate
...extend its unbeaten streak against Colgate to seven games. The Mids won five straight prior to this year's scoreless draw in Annapolis.
...reach the 15-win mark for second-straight year and seventh time in program history
Scouting Colgate
* The Raiders are riding a five-game win streak headed into this weekend's conference tournament. After beginning 0-1-1 in conference play by earning a draw with the Mids and dropping a 4-1 setback versus Lehigh, Colgate won each of its last five conference games - all by a one-goal margin.
* Colgate headed into the final weekend trailing league-leader Bucknell by two points, but topped the visiting Bison 2-1 in overtime to claim the top spot in the regular season standings and right to host the 2009 Patriot League Tournament.
* As the top seed, Colgate will host the tournament at Van Doren Field, where it is 6-3-0 this season.
* Colgate is led by two-time First-Team All-Patriot League selection and senior team captain Jillian Arnault. Joining her on the conference's first-team is defensive leader junior Calista Victor. Pacing the Raiders offensively is freshman and second-team all-league selection Jillian Kinter, who leads the team with 11 points (4 g, 3 a).
* Colgate has received strong play in goal from Patriot League Rookie of the Year Ashley Walsh. Walsh has started all 18 matches, owns a 0.84 goals-against-average and has posted six shutouts, including three in Patriot League play.
*The Mids are 9-3-2 mark in their last 14 meetings with Colgate.
* Navy produced a pair of 1-0 wins over the Raiders in successive weekends in 2008, the latter of which came in overtime and ended Colgate's season in the league semifinals. Julie Reynolds ('09) provided the contest's lone score in the 15th minute to lead Navy in the regular season finale for both teams in Hamilton, N.Y. on Nov. 1. Just six days later, the two teams went toe-to-toe in Annapolis in a spirited Patriot League Semifinal matchup. The contest was scoreless until the 96th minute when then-freshman Kate Herren
* Colgate is the only Patriot League program that owns a winning record against the Midshipmen.

Answering The Call: Reed Named League Goalkeeper of the Year
Navy senior team captain Beth Reed has made the most of her first season as the squad's starting keeper. This fall, Reed has been sensational in goal for the Mids, recording a senior class record nine solo shutouts (four in Patriot League play), a conference-best 0.67 goals-against average and the 13th-best save percentage in the country (.875) on her way to being named the 2009 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year.
Only the fourth goalkeeper in program history to be elected team captain, Reed joins her former mentor, Lizzie Barnes ('09) and Kate MacFarlane ('03) as the only Navy netminders to have earned Player of the Year laurels. She has produced a 0.62 GAA in 42 career appearances (2,630 minutes) and a .869 save percentage (119 saves / 137 SOG), both which rank first in Midshipmen history. Moreover, she currently stands among the top-five in saves, save percentage, shutouts and GAA on the Navy single-season charts.
Reed also became Navy's fourth Patriot League Scholar-Athlete, joining Lizzie Barnes in 2008, Kate Macfarlane in 2001 and Nicole Aunapu in 1997 and 1998. It is the second-straight year a Navy player has received the conference's top student-athlete honor. A year ago, Lizzie Barnes ('09) completed an identical coup, claiming both the Goalkeeper of the Year and Scholar-Athlete awards. Reed owns a 3.97 grade-point average as a mechanical engineering major and ranks second in Overall Order of Merit among the 1,064 midshipmen in the Class of 2010.
Reed's 2009 Achievements, Honors:
*Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year
*Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Four Mids Earn All-PL Recognition
Navy placed four players on the All-Patriot League Teams, headed by a pair of first-team honorees in seniors Shelly Moeller and Beth Reed. Juniors Christine Calderon and Carissa Youker both garnered second-team all-league recognition.
Navy has put at least two players on the All-League Team in all 16 years as a member of the conference.
Inarguably one of finest defenders in Navy and Patriot League history, Moeller was named a league all-star for the fourth-straight year and for the third time to the conference's first-team. She is one of just six Navy soccer players in program history and the first since Xochitl Piedra (2001-2004) to become a four-year All-Patriot League selection.
This season, Moeller has anchored a Navy defense that posted a conference-best 11 shutouts and ranks second in the league in GAA. She also leads all Patriot League defenders in scoring in 2009 with nine points on three goals and three assists.
One of only three players to twice be named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Moeller has helped Navy post at least 11 shutouts in each of her four seasons and 53 total shutouts since her freshman season. Additionally, with 18 goals and 43 career points she stands as the highest scoring defender in program history.
Meanwhile, Reed and Calderon both were first-time all-league selections, while Youker found herself as a second-team choice for the second-straight year after leading the PL in scoring with a career-best 23 points.
Moeller's Record-Setting streak at 89 Games and Counting...
Senior Shelly Moeller tied a school record by making her 89th career start last Sunday versus Howard. Moeller has started every game of her collegiate career and will take over as Navy's career games-played leader this weekend. Her consecutive games-started streak is the longest in school history and is believed to be among the longest in the 20-year history of Patriot League soccer (men's or women's).
Making this stretch even more impressive is the fact that Moeller, regarded as one of the conference's most physical defenders, rarely comes out of a match and, has led the team in minutes played four years running. This fall, she leads Navy with 1,715 minutes played.

Youker Paces the Navy Attack
*Junior Carissa Youker was the conference's leading scorer during the regular season with a career-best 23 points, earning Second-Team All-Patriot League honors for second-straight year. She is one of five double-figure point scorers for a Navy team, which owns the Patriot League's highest scoring offense (2.05 goals per game) headed into this weekend.
Youker has built upon her breakout sophomore season (7 g, 2 a) in 2009, establishing new career-highs in goals (9), assists (5) and points (23). She has also maintained her incredible propensity for scoring game-winning goals, netting a Patriot League-high five game-winners, including the lone goal in the Mids' 1-0 upset of ACC opponent Miami (Fla.) on Sept. 6.
It is the second-straight season that Youker has produced five game-winners. Of her 18 career goals, 11 have stood to be game-winners, which ties her with Brigitte Fox ('08) for the third-most in school history.
*Navy has been led by a remarkably well-balanced offense, featuring five double-figure scorers and 19 different players with at least a point, including starting keeper Beth Reed, who notched her first career assist in a win over Army. A league-high 11 different players have scored a goal for Navy this season.
*Led by Youker, five Mids appear among the conference's top-10 scorers. Senior Brittany White is tied for fifth overall with a career-best 16 points (5 g, 6 a), while junior Christine Calderon ranks seventh with 15 points (6 g, 3 a).
*A Second-Team All-Patriot League selection, Calderon has enjoyed a terrific year in the attacking third, producing a career-high six goals, three game-winners and 15 points. In seven league games, she has produced a team-high seven points with an assist and three goals, including the game-winners in conference victories over Holy Cross and Lehigh.
*Brittany Fruin, meanwhile, leads all conference freshmen with 13 points (4 g, 5 a) and is tied with sophomore teammate Annie Kendzior (6 g, 1 a) for the eighth-most points in the league.
Duo Earns All-Academic Honors
Navy seniors Shelly Moeller and Beth Reed were recently selected to the CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II First Team in recognition of their standout efforts on the field and in the classroom.
This is the fourth-straight year that at least two Navy players received first-team academic all-district kudos. Moeller has been named to the first team in each of the last two seasons, while Reed is a first-time selection.
By virtue of the honor, they will now go on the ballot for national Academic All-America honors.

Patriot League Tournament Tidbits
*The 2008 Patriot League Championship was the first in conference history that saw all three contests require overtime to determine a winner.
*With third-seeded Army's victory a year ago, the hard-luck of the league's top seed in the four-team playoff continued. Colgate's 2004 squad has been the only No. 1 seed since 1999 (a span of nine championships) that has gone on to win the league crown. In fact, the top seed has won the title only five times in 18 playoffs.
*Since the first Patriot League Tournament was held in 1991, only one No. 4 seed, the 2005 Bucknell Bison, has won both games and claimed the conference's automatic NCAA bid.
