Elizabeth Hoerner Named Patriot League Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Nov. 6, 2013
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Navy senior team captain Elizabeth Hoerner (Lititz, Pa.) grabbed her second straight major Patriot League women’s soccer award this week when she was named the sport’s scholar-athlete of the year, announced the league office on Wednesday.
Following Monday’s announcement as the conference’s Goalkeeper of the Year, Hoerner became the second Navy and third Patriot League women’s soccer student-athlete to win the award in back-to-back seasons (Navy’s Nicole Aunapu: 1997-98; Lafayette’s Heidi Caruso: 1992-93). Since 1990, Navy has won the award six times, which is the most in league history (Aunapu: 1997-98; Kate Macfarlane: 2001; Lizzie Barnes: 2008; Beth Reed: 2009; Hoerner: 2012-13).
Hoerner became Navy’s fourth goalkeeper, in program history, to receive both the conference’s top student-athlete honor and top goalkeeper award in the same year in 2012. The senior net-minder has now repeated the same feat in 2013. Beth Reed recorded the coup in 2009 and Lizzie Barnes in 2008. In 2001, Kate Macfarlane was named the league’s defensive player of the year, before the creation of the keeper of the year award.
Hoerner has a 3.86 GPA as a Honors Oceanography major. She has been named to the Superintendent’s List five times and the Commandant’s List six times. She ranks second among her 1,098 classmates in Military Order of Merit and is 61st in Overall Order of Merit.
The Lititz, Pa. native was recently placed on the 2013 Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District II Team. By virtue of the honor, the senior captain will now go on the ballot for national Academic All-America honors.
On the field, Hoerner is in the midst of terrific senior season, leading Navy to a 15-4 overall record and the program's eighth Patriot League regular-season title. She was second in the Patriot League during the regular season with a 0.53 goals-against average, which is 18th-best in the country and has a share of conference lead and has tied the Navy senior class record with nine solo shutouts.
A three-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week this year, Hoerner has quickly risen up the Navy single-season and career lists despite being in just her second year as the full-time starter. In 42 career appearances, she has produced a 31-6-2 career record with a 0.78 GAA and a .830 save percentage, both which currently rank third in program history.
The Patriot League annually selects a league scholar-athlete of the year for each individual sport the league sponsors. Nominees for this accolade must be a varsity letterwinner who is at least a sophomore academically with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or above. At the end of the academic year, an overall Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year is determined from a ballot consisting of that year's individual sport award winners.
Hoerner and the Midshipmen will take on the No. 5 seed American in the semifinals of the 2013 Patriot League Women's Soccer Tournament on Friday, beginning at 3:30 pm from the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis, Md. The match will be streamed live and for free on the Patriot League Network, along with Joe Miller as the play-by-play announcer.
