Dec. 12, 2011
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy women's soccer players Kate Herren and Ashlynn Soellner have been named to the 2011 NCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) recently announced. Soellner was selected to the second team and Herren was named to the third team. Both Soellner and Herren were named to the All-Patriot League First Team last month.
Soellner and Herren helped lead Navy to a 13-6-3 (4-2-1 PL) season that ended in the Patriot League Championship game. Navy reclaimed the N-Star with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Army in the regular season.
Soellner, a sophomore midfielder from Hollidaysburg Pa., led Navy with six goals and held a share of the team lead in points with 12. Soellner's four goals in conference play led the Patriot League.
With Navy searching for a playoff berth heading into the last weekend of the season, Soellner scored in a win over Holy Cross and had the game's only goal in a 1-0 win over Bucknell to clinch Navy's postseason bid. Soellner then tallied a key second-half goal in Navy's 3-2 win over Lafayette in the Patriot League semifinals.
Soellner totaled three game-winning goals this season, earned two Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week awards and was named to the Patriot League All-Tournament team.
Herren is a senior defender from Auburn, Wash. and served as the 2011 team captain. Herren was a presence on both ends of the field, leading Navy's defensive efforts from her central defender position while also leading the team with six assists. Her four assists during Patriot League play led the conference.
Herren started 21 games for Navy on the season and led the team with 1982 minutes, rarely coming off the field.
Herren was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week three times and was named to the Navy Invitational All-Tournament team.
Navy has had 23 selections to the all-region team since 1995. The most recent honoree was Shelly Moeller ('10), who earned three all-region accolades.
The Mid-Atlantic Region is made up of teams from the Atlantic 10, CAA, Patriot League and Ivy League. Navy and Army paced the Patriot League with two selections each.
