Mids Conclude Diving Season

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The 2012 Navy diving season came to a conclusion this weekend with a trio of Midshipmen taking part in the NCAA Zone `A' Diving Championship at Alumni Natatorium on the University at Buffalo campus in Buffalo, N.Y.
Courtney Vandament (Sr., Coppell, Texas), who just a few weeks ago was tabbed as the 2012 Patriot League Women's Diver of the Year, scored 192.35 points to place 42nd on the one-meter event and tallied 206.35 points to finish in 35th place on the three-meter board.
"Courtney had a great senior season," said Navy diving coach Joe Suriano. "She has steadily improved since her freshman year and is a great competitor. She really rips her entries into the water. Courtney also has been a great success in the classroom throughout her four years here. I will miss working with her."
The men's one-meter event saw Ben Freedman (So., Kennewick, Wash.) finish in 20th place on the one meter with a score of 263.60 points, while Wil Mayo (So., The Woodlands, Texas) placed 38th with his tally of 218.85 points. In the three-meter competition, Freedman accrued 251.70 points to place 30th with Mayo scoring 209.85 points to finish in 38th place.
Neither Vandament nor Freedman took part in Sunday's platform diving competition, but Mayo scored 537.95 points to place eighth in the 10-diver field.
"Ben has a strong future," said Suriano. "He needs to work on his finishes a little more. Wil enters the water without a splash as well as anyone in the world does."
