Mids to Compete at League Meet
Links associated with this release: ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A mix of veterans and rookies will comprise the Navy women's swimming and diving team at the Patriot League Championship, held this week in Hamilton, N.Y. Competition gets underway Thursday morning at Lineberry Natatorium on the Colgate campus, with the meet running through Saturday night. Navy, Army and defending champion Lehigh all have title hopes this weekend. Lehigh totaled 690.5 points in winning last year's title, outdistancing second-place Navy by 31.5 points. "Any of those three teams could win the championship," said Navy head coach Dick Purdy. "It is going to be a very, very close meet and it may not be determined until the final relay on Saturday night. "This year we beat Army by just two points at their place, and Army beat Lehigh by only 11 points. All three teams are very talented. Every race and every point will matter." Navy will travel seven swimmers who have combined to win 20 league titles in their careers to the meet. Leading the way is Melissa Hawley (Jr., Brentwood, Tenn.) who has won seven titles and team captain Erin Emery (Sr., San Antonio, Texas) who has won five league championships. Hawley is seeded first in a pair of events and is ranked among the top-five swimmers in each of her events. Emery is seeded first in the 200 freestyle, second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle. Other Navy swimmers with past championships include Katie Ball (Jr., Millersville, Md.), Cari Murtagh (Jr., Keller, Texas) and Amy Jones (Jr., Warrenton, N.C.) with two titles apiece, as well as Katie Costello (So., Lynbrook, N.Y.) and Kate Windstein (Jr., Lancaster, Pa.) who have each won one championship. Five freshman dot the Navy roster for the weekend, including B.J. Matlock (Paducah, Ky.) who is seeded first in the 100 butterfly. Navy will also rely heavily upon top-diver Megan Barnett, who placed second to teammate Elizabeth Peterson in both the one and three-meter events at the 2000 championship, and who enters the 2001 meet seeded first in both disciplines. "It is going to be an exciting meet," said Purdy. "We hope we swim our best and are able to bring the championship back."
