Mids Place Third at Patriot League Meet

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- The Navy women's swimming and diving team finished in third place at the 2001 Patriot League Championship, held this week in Hamilton, N.Y. The Midshipmen totaled 594 points in the three-day competition and finished behind league-champion Lehigh (637.5 points) and second-place Bucknell (601).

Navy's lone victory on Saturday came from Melissa Hawley who won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:06.04. For Hawley it was her second title of the meet and her fifth-career individual championship.

Jessica Box was Navy's only finalist in the 1650 freestyle, placing eighth with a time of 17:53.82. Julie Dunnigan placed fifth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.22, while Katie Ball finished in eighth place in the event with a time of 2:11.65.

Team captain Erin Emery closed her Patriot League career by placing third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.81. Allison Moon finished in seventh place in the 200 breaststroke with a clocking of 2:30.19.

Navy closed the championship by finishing second in the 400 freestyle relay. The Navy team of Katie Costello, B.J. Matlock, Emery and Hawley finished with a time of 3:34.10.

Navy will conclude its season this coming weekend when the Midshipmen compete in the ECAC Championship in Sewell, N.J.
