Barber Named Navy Athlete of the Week
ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Women’s swimmer Lauren Barber (Jr., New Wilmington, Pa.) has been selected as this week’s Navy Athlete of the Week.
Barber had a hand in seven victories during this weekend’s Patriot League Championship to help Navy win the team title for the seventh year in a row. That effort also earned her the Patriot League Swimmer-of-the-Year accolade for the second-straight season. She began her career by being tabbed as the league’s rookie (freshman) of the year at the 2016 meet.
Individually, Barber began the meet by posting a time of 1:55.87 to win the 200 individual medley by nearly two seconds. That clocking also broke her own Navy, league and meet record of 1:57.89, and bettered the NCAA B cut standard by almost four seconds. Barber then posted a time of 1:00.86 to win the 100 breaststroke by 1.34 seconds and better the NCAA B cut time of 1:02.49. Her individual event effort was capped with her winning the 200 breaststroke by 1.7 seconds with a clocking of 2:12.28. That time also was under the NCAA B cut standard (2:15.99).
Barber would also swim the breaststroke leg on Navy’s winning 200 and 400 medley relay teams, swim the anchor leg on the victorious 800 freestyle relay team and swim the third leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay team.
She has now won all 21 events she has been entered into at the league meet in her career. Her 21 victories has set a new league record for the most events won by either a male or female swimmer at the meet. The previous record of 20 was held by Navy’s Laura Gorinski (2010-13).
