Barber Earns NAAA Honor
ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Women’s swimmer Lauren Barber (So., New Wilmington, Pa.), who won seven events at last week’s Patriot League Championship and was tabbed as the swimmer of the meet, has been selected as this week’s Naval Academy Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for the time frame ending Feb. 19.
Barber’s efforts helped Navy win its sixth league crown in a row. She posted NCAA B cut times in winning the 200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke events at the championship, the same three events she won at the 2016 league meet when she was named the rookie (freshman) of the meet. Barber would also swim on Navy’s winning 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay teams.
The sophomore is already more than two-thirds of the way to the league record for the most event victories recorded by an individual in a career at the championship. Barber has totaled 14 event wins in her two seasons to place herself within reach of the current record of 20 held by Navy’s Laura Gorinski.
