Bailey Named League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Swimming & Diving
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. –– Navy’s Ryan Bailey (Sr., Youngstown, Ohio) has been selected as the 2017 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s swimming and diving. He was one of five Mids –– three men, two women –– from the sport to be named to academic all-league team by the league office on Friday.
Bailey is just the second men’s swimmer or diving to garner the accolade since Navy joined the Patriot League, and is the first since Noah White earned the laurel in the program’s inaugural 2003-04 campaign.
Nominees for the award needed to be at least a sophomore in the classroom, carry a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be key contributor on their team.
The operations research major has posted a 3.98 cumulative grade-point average at Navy and has previously been named to the academic all-league team in both 2015 and ‘16. He also earned Third-Team Academic All-America honors for at-large sports from the College Sports Information Directors of America one year ago.
In the pool, Bailey garnered First-Team All-Patriot League honors during last week’s league championship as the Mids won their 14th title in as many years of competing at the meet. He won the 100 butterfly title, placed fourth in the 200 fly, sixth in the 100 breaststroke and swam on Navy’s winning 400 medley relay team at the championship. This year’s first-team nod follows his garnering second-team accolades in both 2015 and 2016. He advanced to the championship final (top-eight swimmers) in five of his nine career individual events at the league meet.
Joining Bailey from Navy on the 10-member men’s academic all-league team were Zach Piedt (So., Fort Mill, S.C.) and Michael Velazquez (So., Henderson, Nev.), both of whom earned second-team all-league honors one week ago.
Piedt placed fourth in the 100 fly and fifth in the 50 and 100 free events and was part of Navy’s victorious 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. He also earned second-team all-league honors at the 2016 championship. In the classroom, Piedt has compiled a 3.94 GPA as a computer science major.
Velazquez reached a pair of championship finals at last week’s meet, placing seventh in the 200 breaststroke and eighth int he 100 breast. He also finished in 11th place in the 200 individual medley event. The physics major has posted a 3.74 GPA at Navy.
After missing the entire 2015-16 season due to a torn ACL, Meyer bounced back to earn First-Team All-Patriot League honors at last week’s championship. She won both the 200 and 500 freestyle events at the meet while also swimming on the winning 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams. The 2015 Patriot League Swimmer of the Year totaled 10 titles in seven different events in her three years of competing at the meet. The operations research entered her final semester at Navy with a 3.35 GPA.
O’Reilly totaled the second-most individual event points (54) of any women’s swimmer at the recent league meet. She won the 200 backstroke title and placed second in both the 200 and 400 individual medley finals to earn First-Team All-Patriot League laurels. Those successes were in addition to her being part of Navy’s winning 400 medley relay team. She has now earned a first-team all-league nod in each of her three seasons, while also posted a 3.48 GPA as an operations research major.
