CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy women's swimmer Laura Gorinski (Sr., Greensburg, Pa.) was selected as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for her sport on Wednesday. It is the third year in a row in which Gorinski has received the honor.
Nominees for the award must be at least a sophomore in the classroom with a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average over the course of their academic career and key contributors in their sport. The league's sports information contacts for the sport then vote for both the scholar-athlete of the year and the Patriot League All-Academic Team.
This is the third year in which an all-academic team has been selected. A total of 10 swimmers and divers comprise the squad.
With receipt of this year's award, Gorinski joins Kelly Zahalka (Class of 2009) as both the second Mid to be selected as the scholar-athlete of the year for a sport three times in a career, as well as the second women's swimmer in league history to garner the accolade three times.
Gorinski has compiled a 3.68 GPA as an astrophysics major. She has spent the 2012-13 academic year conducting research as a Bowman Scholar and will join the submarine community upon graduating from Navy this spring. Gorinski received First-Team Academic All-District accolades from the College Sports Information Directors of America in 2012 after having garnered second-team honors in 2011.
In the pool, Gorinski was selected as the 2010 Patriot League Rookie of the Year and as the league's swimmer of the year in both 2012 and 2013. She totaled 11 individual event titles and to go along with one second-place finish (in 2011) in 12 races at the Patriot League Championship over the course of her career to break the previous career league standard -- for both men and women -- of 10. Gorinski also was a member of nine victorious relay teams at the meet, giving her 20 overall titles to set another new league record (was 18) for a men's or women's swimmer. She is the first women's swimmer and just the second swimmer in league history to win four-straight titles in multiple individual events (both breaststroke events).
Gorinski competed in both breaststroke events at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, which came a few months after her becoming the first swimmer in Navy and Patriot League history to compete in three individual events at an NCAA (D-1) National Championship. She leaves Navy holding the school record in both breaststroke and both individual medley events, as well as league records in the 200 individual medley, the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke events.
She is the fourth women's swimmer to have been tabbed as both the league's swimmer and scholar-athlete of the year in a career (Jill Adessa, Holy Cross; Coleen Lynch, Holy Cross; Zahalka) and the first to win both awards multiple times.
In addition to her individual accomplishments, Gorinski helped Navy win Patriot League team titles in 2010, 2012 and 2013 and place second at the 2011 league meet.
