Gorinski to Compete at NCAA Championship
March 14, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy swimmer Laura Gorinski (Jr., Greensburg, Pa.) will make the first appearance of her career at the NCAA Championship this week when she competes in the three-day meet that begins Thursday at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center in Auburn, Ala.
Daily trial heat sessions begin at noon EDT, with the nightly session of finals starting at 8 p.m. Auburn's web site, AuburnTigers.com, will provide both live results and streaming video of the entire championship.
Gorinski, who was tabbed as both the Patriot League Women's Swimmer of the Year and league's scholar-athlete of the year for the sport, has qualified to compete in a trio of events at the championship. She is seeded 55th in Thursday's 200 individual medley event (1:59.95), 30th in Friday's 100 breaststroke (1:00.72) and 25th in Saturday's 200 breaststroke (2:10.67).
The top eight swimmers in each event will advance into the championship final later that evening, with the next eight finishers from the morning returning to the pool at night to compete in the consolation final.
Gorinski is the sixth member of the Navy women's swimming and diving program to advance to the NCAA Championship since Navy's inaugural year -- 1991-92 -- of competition on the Division I level. Additionally, this is the fifth consecutive season in which Navy has sent a swimmer or diver to either the men's or women's national championship.
