BALTIMORE, Md. -- Tara Chapmon (Virginia Beach, Va.) headlined the list of Navy swimmers who earned Scholar All-America recognition from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Thursday.
To receive the accolade, student-athletes must have both attained a grade-point average of at least 3.50 during a semester and qualified for the NCAA Championship Meet. Chapmon, a rising senior, qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 200, 500 and 1,650 freestyle events and posted a 3.80 GPA during the spring semester. The 2008 and `09 Patriot League Women's Swimmer of the Year is the first Navy swimmer to earn Scholar-All-America honors.
Those student-athletes who recorded a GPA of at least 3.50 during a term along with an NCAA `B' cut qualifying time are tabbed as Honorable Mention Scholar All-Americans. James Lascara (Charlotte, N.C.) and Mark Meyer (Bethesda, Md.) from the Navy men's program earned this honor. Lascara, who is entering his senior year at Navy, posted a 3.86 GPA during the spring semester and achieved a `B' cut qualifying time in the 500 freestyle event. Meyer, a rising sophomore, recorded a 3.50 GPA during the spring term and attained a `B' cut time in the 200 butterfly event.
Additionally, the Navy women's swimming program earned Team Scholar All-America laurels from the CSCAA. Teams receive the honor when they post a combined GPA of at least 3.00 during a semester. The Navy women's team posted a 3.09 GPA during the 2009 spring term to garner the academic accolade.
