CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- The Patriot League office announced Monday that Navy's Laura Gorinski (Sr., Greensburg, Pa.) was selected as this week's women's swimmer of the week in the league and Ben Freedman (Jr., Kennewick, Wash.) garnered the league's men's diver-of-the-week accolade. The laurels were bestowed upon the duo for their respective efforts in helping the Mids to a sweep of league foes American and Bucknell Saturday.
Gorinski, who previously earned the nod two weeks ago, won a trio of individual events and was a member of Navy's victorious 200 medley relay squad in the meet. She won both breaststroke events (1:05.53, 2:22.43, respectively) and the 200 individual medley (2:07.86) race against the Eagles and the Bison by a total margin of over five seconds. Gorinski has now won three individual events 11 times in the 20 meets in her career in which she has been entered into three races.
Freedman scored 301.05 points to win the three-meter board by over 50 points and placed second on the one meter to teammate Wil Mayo (Jr., The Woodlands, Texas) by four points with his tally of 280.40. He has won the three-meter event four times in six meets this season.
Gorinski has totaled 13 weekly honors from the Patriot League in her career -- the league record of 16 was set by Navy's Tara Chapmon -- while Freedman's award was his second of the season and the seventh accolade of his career.
Both Navy teams are off from competition this week. Their seasons will resume Nov. 15-17 when the Mids travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take part in the Nike Cup.
